On the 23rd and the 24th of April, the Belgian Federal Council for Sustainable Development (FRDO- CFDD) and the Minaraad are officially hosting a conference on adaptation to climate change.
Together we will examine the state of implementation of the EU adaptation policy and compare national perspectives. The FRDO-CFDD and the Minaraad are part of the European Environment and Sustainable Development Advisory Councils Network (EEAC). It is a network of 19 advisory councils on climate, environment and sustainable development operating at national and regional level. This conference marks their 32nd yearly gathering. As every year, we look forward to exchanging ideas with a wide range of actors interested in bettering policy-making.
On the 23rd of April we will approach the adaptation and resilience challenge in 3 ways:
- First we look at the state of the implementation of the EU Adaptation Strategy and ask what the new EEA Climate Risk Assessment Report means to Member States and advisory councils. The Commission and the European Environmental Agency will join us for a morning session.
- Then we will have a closer look at the financing of adaptation with contributions from the EIB, the OECD and the IISD. How can the insurance sector contribute to combating adaptation risks? What are financing strategies for developing countries?
- Lastly, we will discuss how we can make sure we leave no one behind. How do we measure progress in this regard? What is the perspective of workers? And how can we minimize health risks?
The EEAC advisory councils will intervene with two panels on the European Climate Risk Assessment (EUCRA) publication and with a discussion on lessons learned regarding national efforts to better adaptation policy-making.
On the 24th of April we will gather for a regional session with cross-border lessons from Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, and Germany. The main focus will be to compare national adaptation strategies and to speak about crisis management and interregional cooperation on floods and other climate related disasters.
